The explosion of human power over the last five centuries did not start with knowing more. It started with admitting that we don't know. That inversion is easy to miss because we habitually equate progress with accumulated answers. Harari reverses the causality: first came the collective willingness to say "we are ignorant about the most important questions," and only then did the modern scientific triad—admitted ignorance, observation and mathematics, and the pursuit of new powers—become possible. Premodern traditions had ignorance, but only of the individual kind, fixable by consulting the right authority. They never allowed that the tradition itself might be incomplete. Once knowledge becomes provisional and revisable, the shared myths that hold societies together grow fragile. So modern order rests on either freezing some theory into dogma or leaning on unproven humanist assumptions about human worth.

Technical design reviews often reproduce the same confusion. Someone treats "we don't know" as a project risk and tries to bury it under more detail. Mature teams do the opposite: they name the open questions first, then decide which methods can approach them. That is the scientific mindset Harari describes. Admitting ignorance is not weakness; it is what gives observation and verification somewhere to stand. The difference is that in engineering we can explicitly scope out what we are not handling yet. At the societal level, writing "provisional" into everyone's daily beliefs is far harder.

Take It With You

Admitting ignorance launched the scientific revolution, but modern societies have never really learned to live with permanently revisable knowledge. We just temporarily absolutize certain theories so that life can go on.
