CHAPTER 18
Finding the Right Company
Read It
A dead-end Staff path doesn’t always mean you weren’t good enough. Sometimes the company simply doesn’t have that path. The organization’s growth stage, governance style, sponsorship dynamics, stability, and pace all determine whether a senior technical role actually exists. The most useful question in a job search isn’t “Do they like me?” but “Does my ability solve a problem they genuinely have?” Being appreciated for a persona is far less durable than being needed for a scarce capability. This chapter reframes company selection as a systems judgment: you’re not rating a company on a single axis, but checking whether the combination of culture, archetype support, and sponsorship makes a Staff-plus role structurally possible.

The match between person and company isn’t a score. It’s a set of constraints that interact. Does the company allow exceptions for exceptional people, or does it enforce consistency? Is it growing fast enough to create openings, or stable enough to make them rare? Are there sponsors willing to spend political capital? Is leadership stable enough for a multi-year promotion timeline? Visualizing these as a system prevents the common failure of falling for one bright spot—a great title, a high salary—while ignoring the other conditions that determine whether the role is real.
Rethink It
In interviews, you can observe whether the company strictly enforces pay bands, whether it has ever created a role for a specific person, why this Staff position is open now, and who would resource it. None of these have a single correct answer, but they reveal how the company actually grants authority. Even when all the structural conditions look right, culture health and mission alignment still can’t be skipped. A company that values you for superficial traits will eventually disappoint, no matter how good the title looks on paper.
Take It With You
Your career ceiling is set by both your ability and whether the organization has room to use that ability. Choosing a company is itself a Staff-level systems decision.
