The most striking thing about the pupil data isn't that pupils widen as tasks get harder. It's that beyond a certain load, they stop widening—the task gets abandoned. System 2's effort isn't willpower you can squeeze indefinitely. It's a finite resource that gets carefully rationed. On the surface, this chapter is about attention and cognitive load. Underneath, it's about something more basic: we think we can handle many things at once, but System 2 is really just doing fine-grained scheduling, protecting the core task and giving leftovers to everything else.

"Focus" and "blindness" usually get treated as two separate things, one good and one bad. But the data in this chapter puts them on the same level: when attention is prioritized to one task, missing surrounding information is the inevitable result—nearly half the time. Once I laid it out visually, the hierarchy became clear: the law of least effort is the underlying rule, pupil changes are its physiological expression, and attentional blindness is its behavioral consequence. System 2's ability to hold multiple ideas at once and weigh options across attributes only makes sense under the constraint of limited resources. Otherwise, you'd think System 2 can do anything.

Rethink It

In an incident postmortem, someone says, "I was so focused I didn't see the alert." It sounds like an excuse, but this chapter gives it a mechanism: high-intensity tasks really do crowd out attention. The question isn't who to blame for not being careful enough. It's whether the system was designed with the known constraint that people can be too focused to see obvious information. Monitoring alerts can't rely on human eyes, because System 2 at full load won't scan those secondary signals at all.

Take It With You

Focus costs blindness. That's not a flaw; it's a resource allocation result. Instead of asking people to be more vigilant, I'd rather design systems that force a break in focus at critical moments.
