Cognitive Ease
Read It
The most counterintuitive thing about cognitive ease is that it treats "feels smooth" as a substitute for "is correct." A clearer font, a rhyming sentence, hearing the same claim a few times—all make us more likely to nod along. These factors have no logical connection to each other, yet they all feed the same mental dial that decides whether we're relaxed or alert right now. The real problem isn't that we're too trusting. It's that we don't notice we're mistaking fluency for fact. When information enters the brain without friction, System 1 assumes it has already passed inspection.

In prose, cause and effect get compressed into the same thing. Font, wording, repetition, mood—these are different inputs driving the dial. Familiarity, credibility, willingness to engage—these are the outputs after the dial moves. If you don't separate them, readers easily think cognitive ease is just "feeling good so believing more," and miss that multiple inputs can substitute for each other and act on the same judgment channel. Once the relationship is in a diagram, the single-dial structure becomes clear: no single factor is doing the work; they're all pushing in the same direction.
Rethink It
When I write a technical proposal, I remind myself: if a document reads too smoothly, that doesn't mean the design holds up. In review meetings, proposals with beautiful formatting, consistent terminology, and a story-like logic tend to get silent approval. Documents with tight fonts, rough diagrams, and places that force you to stop and think are the ones that make people ask, "Why this choice?" The cost of cognitive ease is that careful thinking leaves the room.
Take It With You
When information is obviously absurd or contradicts known facts, no amount of smooth packaging can save it. So the boundary of cognitive ease is this: it can amplify a tendency, but it can't create one from nothing.
